Barabar ("the app", "we") is a free money tracker for personal spending, lending and borrowing (khata), flatmates and group trips. It is available as a website at hisaabbarabar.app and as an Android app. This policy explains what data the app handles and why.
Your entries stay on your device
Books, expenses, income, khata entries, accounts, budgets, goals, notes and receipt photos are stored on your phone or in your browser. The app works fully offline and does not require an account. Nothing you enter is sent to us unless you choose to sign in.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional and is used only for backup across devices and for shared flatmates or trip books. You can sign in with Google, Apple or a one-time email code. When you sign in we store:
- your email address, and your name if your Google or Apple account provides it, to identify your account;
- a copy of your books and entries, so you can open them on another device;
- for a shared book, the book's entries and the list of people who joined it.
This data is stored with our database provider, Supabase, and is encrypted in transit. Access is restricted per user by the database: only you can read your private books, and only the people you invite can read a shared book. We do not use your email for marketing and we do not sell or rent your data.
Sharing
When you share a summary, a statement or a reminder, the app hands plain text to your phone's share sheet (for example WhatsApp); you choose who receives it. A read-only trip link contains a copy of that trip inside the link itself; anyone who has the link can read it. Receipt photos are never included in shared links.
Advertising
Barabar is free forever and is paid for by advertising from Google: Google AdSense on the website, and Google AdMob and AdSense in the Android app. Ads appear between entries in lists and, from time to time, full screen after you save an entry. Google and its partners may use cookies or your device's advertising ID to show and measure ads, and may personalise ads where you have allowed it. On the website you can choose non-personalised ads in Settings. In the Android app, Google's consent form (shown where the law requires it) and your phone's ad settings control personalisation. Your money entries are never sent to Google or to any advertiser. Learn more about how Google uses data in ads.
Voice, photos and screenshots
Voice entry uses your phone's speech service to turn speech into text; the app keeps only the text. When you scan a payment screenshot, the text is read on your device and the image is not uploaded. Receipt photos you attach stay on your device.
Analytics
The app does not use third-party analytics or tracking beyond the advertising described above. If we add privacy-friendly usage counts in future, they will contain no names, amounts or notes, and this policy will be updated.
Deleting your data
Settings → Erase removes everything from the device you are using. If you signed in, Settings → Delete my account permanently deletes your account and its cloud copy. Shared books you created pass to another member so their records are not lost. You can also email us to ask for deletion. See Delete your account.
Children
Barabar is not directed at children under 13 and is not designed for use by children.
Money
Barabar never moves money and never asks for bank or card logins. When you settle up, it can open your own UPI app with an amount filled in; the payment happens in that app, not in Barabar.
Changes and contact
